Cascade Locks Biennale

Chiseled Earth - Fall 2022 - Instructor: Amy Rakich

Design Intent: Arriving at the Cascade Locks and exploring the manicured landscape you would never realize that Thunder Island is the result of a severely invasive construction project during the 19th century. Thunder islands existence came about through the excavation and carving of existing earth to create a passageway for steamboats and cargo ships to get around the cascades that no longer exist due to the damming of the Columbia River. The design is meant to reflect and exacerbate the invasive nature of the locks and highlight the different invasive species of the Columbia River Basin.
